Aberfeldy School is part of the Governments Ka Ora Ka Aka Lunch programme.
Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches
Term 1, 2025
Ka Ora, Ka Ako provides a nutritious lunch to over 242,000 ākonga | students across Aotearoa New Zealand every school day.
The name Ka Ora, Ka Ako is about being healthy and well to be in a good place to learn. ‘Ka Ora’ means to be satisfied with food, be well, healthy, and safe. ‘Ka Ako’ means to learn
- What it provides: Meals, free to students, every school day that meet nutritional standards and recipes previously enjoyed by students of all ages.
- What it supports: Good nutrition is essential for the healthy growth and development of children and young people. Healthy food improves student behaviour, learning, concentration, and energy, as well as physical health. When students eat healthy food, they are happier and find it easier to learn.
- What has changed in 2025:
- Students at your school or kura will receive a free lunch from the School Lunch Collective.
- A three-week menu of hot and cold meals will rotate each term, based on seasonality of ingredients.
- The standardisation of ingredients and recipes allows the combined buying power of the School Lunch Collective to purchase cost effective food items and save significantly on the cost of each meal.
- What will not change:
- Students will get a free hot or cold lunch, every school day.
- Students requiring a special meal will receive their meal named and labelled. This may be for medical reasons such as an allergy or food intolerance, or because foods must be avoided or prepared in a particular way for ethical or religious reasons.
- There are no changes to nutritional standards and meal size. The meals will include a balance of protein, vegetables, grains, or starchy vegetables.
Please contact your school or kura for more information about the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Programme.
